The Personality of Success with Special Guest: Merrick Rosenberg

In January RCS Professional Services was privileged to host Merrick Rosenberg for a virtual event. Merrick is an experienced author, keynote speaker. He is the CEO of Take Flight Learning and has worked with more than half of the Fortune 100 companies. Merrick co-founded Team Builders Plus in 1991 and Take Flight Learning in 2012. Merrick received his MBA from Drexel University who recently selected him as the Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year. Under Merrick’s leadership, his company has been recognized as the New Jersey Business of the Year and named one of the Fastest Growing Companies and Best Places to Work in the Philadelphia area.

Throughout Merrick’s talk he was able to guide the audience to discover more about themselves. Merrick links people’s personality to four different birds. He says that you are either an Eagle, Parrot, Dove or an Owl.

Eagles are very result oriented. They care most about the bottom line and do not need to be overwhelmed with all of the tiny details. Eagles are also very direct and decisive, often taking charge. They are very verbal and fast paced and prefer to work on the task side of a project.  Eagles are more focused on the words being said to them and less on the emotions behind those words.

Parrots are also verbal and fast paced but they differ from Eagles because they prefer to work with people. Parrots are very optimistic and social. They are more enthusiastic and motivational than others. People are drawn to Parrots because of their charisma and magnetism. When being spoken to, a Parrot will focus more on the emotions behind what a person is saying as opposed to their actual words.

Doves are helpful, caring and compassionate. They want everyone to get along. When you have a problem you tend to want to talk to a Dove about it. Doves are very empathetic and great listeners. They are more reserved, less talkative than the Eagle or the Parrot and they prefer to work at a more even pace and on the people side. Doves are similar to Parrots in that they dive deeper into the emotions of the person speaking to them.

Owls are detail oriented and logical. Like the Dove they are more reserved and prefer to work at an even pace. However, Owls prefer to work more on the tasks unlike the Dove who prefers the people side. Owls, like Eagles, are more focused on the words being said to them and less on the emotions behind those words.

You may be wondering why it matters what kind of bird you are. Well, when you know your bird (aka personality type) it makes you more self-aware. The most self-aware people are the most productive, have the strongest relationships and position themselves for career success. Not only is it important to know this for yourself, it is important to know this for the people around you. For example let’s say your boss is an Eagle and you have an idea for a new project you want to tell them about. Knowing that they are an Eagle sets you up for the greatest amount of success. Now you know that instead of making a very detailed power-point with many slides explaining every aspect of the project, you will keep your speech short, be clear and get to the point. That is how an Eagle wants to be spoken to. If your boss is an Owl you will focus more on the details and take your time explaining the full project.

With this knowledge you can better understand people and build stronger relationships in all aspects of your life.

Even yet, it appears more impressive, especially on video conversations, if we never have to look away from the camera when interviewing or presenting. Finding a means to glance at both your notes and the video conference at the same time is the solution. We've discovered an app that can assist you with this: It's called Transparent Note, and it's not a play on words.
